Disturbing Statistics - Jackson, MS

I met with some leaders of a national youth ministry today regarding their proposed work in Jackson. Here were some statistics that came out of the meeting:

  • There are 743 churches in the Jackson Metro Area of which about 300 black churches.
  • Population of the City of Jackson is 82% black
  • There is not a single full time youth minister in any of the Black churches in the city.
  • Black inner-city youth are unwelcome in many (if not most) of the Black churches in Jackson.
  • Many in black community are 2-3 generations removed from any church/Christian influence (i.e. Mom didn't go to church. Grandmother didn't go to church. You have to go back to great grandparents to find any godly influence/heritage in many families)

How disheartening. These statistics make the national statistics look great.
